Cast On: A Terracotta Summer Top

This weekend I’ve cast on my first project for the year that isn’t a pair of socks. I’ve been knitting socks non-stop since Christmas. Whilst a pair is still happily on my needles (because who would be without a sock WIP?), I’ve very much enjoyed starting this fresh project today.

I’m often saying I love garment knitting - I usually knit myself a couple of garments a year. Last year I kicked off my garment making with a summery top and this year I’ve done the same. Reef is Libby Jonson’s newest pattern - a breezy summer tank that I’ve been dying to cast on.

The pattern was released yesterday and was the perfect project to use this yummy ‘Baked Clay’ organic cotton on. I’ve been eyeing this colour for ages (watching it come and go out of the shop whilst planning to nab some for myself). I’ve not made anything in this terracotta colour before so it has a lovely fresh feeling to it. It will pair nicely with my linen shorts for summer and also work with jeans when those first cool wisps of Autumn begin to arrive.

There are two great things about knitting for summer projects during summer. The first is that they are light and cool - a tank top is a lot smaller project to have in my lap than a jumper. The fibre choice also makes it cooler to work on, too. (I’ve chosen organic cotton). The second is the extra motivation to get it finished - if I knit on it along (instead of being distracted by other projects) it will be finished quickly, and I should get around 6 weeks of wear out of it (March isn’t that cold in this part of Australia).

What about you? Do you knit for the season you’re in?
Until next time, happy making!
