The Magic of Knitting
One of the great joys of knitting - or any craft really - is the ability to create whatever your mind imagines or your heart desires.
As a child, I would use my toys to bring to life my imaginings. Now, by selecting the right kind of yarn, pairing it with the right needles and selecting the required techniques, I use my hands to produce what my mind envisions.
Of course, it doesn't always turn out the way I perceived it in my mind's eye, but something wonderful is created none the less.
On my needles at the moment lies a mythical creature - one that belongs only to fairy tales and legend, and one that most little girls like to dream of. Very soon this pile of oddly shaped kitting will transform into an enchanting unicorn. The act of creating is almost like magic, really.
Sometimes, as in all fairy tales, the magic goes wrong, and we find ourselves disheartened with our wasted efforts. But nothing is ever in vain when it comes to crafting. I had to knit the front of my Clara Bow Sweater three times, but in the end I got there and am overjoyed with the results. Mostly my knitting goes pretty smoothly, but earlier in the week I found myself remedying my unicorn's bad knee, only to find that the real trouble had started right back in the hoof.
It's all part of creating - and sometimes mistakes even turn out to be happy discoveries.
What is your favourite craft, and what makes it magical to you?
