September Making
It’s a quiet September morning at the start of a new week. It’s early and the sun is just peeking through the trees. There’s a distinct nip in the air but I know that as the sun rises it will give way to a slightly warmer day.
Spring is here; there are subtle shifts that signal winter has let go and the warmer months are coming. The birds are singing gleefully in the trees now; I enjoy listening to them as they are the clearest sound in the morning before the world wakes up and the busyness of Monday kicks in.
It’s been a while since I’ve written a blog post. I channel most of my writing into Yarnologie these days, and it’s a project I find very satisfying and rewarding. But this morning I thought I’d jump on here and see what words came out.
I’ve lots I could tell you, of course, and I could write about how strange this year has been - but I think we all know that it’s been odd, is continuing to be odd, and we see enough stories like that.
So instead I shall share some photos I’ve been taking lately and some things I’ve been making.
I’ve been knitting socks and, for the first time ever, I’ve ventured to have two different pairs on the go. I usually knit one pair at a time as I like to complete whole pairs before embarking on another (second sock syndrome and all that!).
But I just couldn’t resist casting on these Dreaming of Paris socks (pattern by Joji Locatelli). I thought the pattern was so pretty that I even ended up choosing similar colours to the ones in the design picture!
They haven’t disappointed; I’m thoroughly enjoying knitting them and have almost finished the first one.
In case you’re wondering, I’m using Onion Nettle Sock in Chocolate Brown & Salmon.
Socks have also been on my mind as I decided to squeeze in a final Sock Knitting Club for the year. I had intended the round that finished at that beginning of this month to be the last for 2020, but I decided to open up one final round as so many people were asking about it.
Enrolments close tomorrow and I start teaching on Wednesday. I always love teaching new people to knit socks - everyone has their own unique way of approaching learning, I’ve found, and it’s lots of fun guiding people along.
I’ve also been enjoying working on a new pattern. I’m planning on having it out in October, and all I shall say at this point is that it’s been lots of fun to design as I’ve fully indulged my love of stranded colourwork.
I’m also trying to settle on a larger project to cast on (once I’ve finished those socks!). I can’t decide whether to knit another cropped jumper, ready to wear next Autumn, of if I should whip up a summer top ready for the coming months? Procrastination is what resulted in that second sock WIP!
And I think that’s about all I have time to share today. It’s Monday which isn’t a day I hate (thankfully), but it is a busy one. There’s lots of pretty yarn to package up and send to their new homes, among other things.
Pictured above is a little corner of Say! Little Hen. My miniature spinning wheel stands around 20cm tall - isn’t it cute? The wheel and bobbin actually spin, too, just like my real spinning wheel. Next to it is a jar of the most delicious Australian-made knitting needles by Art Viva. These special needles are the ones I include in my Beginner’s Knitting Kits - I just love these needles and want people to start off using the best.
I’d like to know what you’ve been making lately. Perhaps you’ve been crafting, or baking, or gardening. Leave a comment below!
Happy new week,
Sarah
