Colourwork Magic

One of the things that is so delightful about knitting is that, at the heart of it, there are only 2 stitches you need to know.

Knitting and purling - every other technique and stitch are just a variation with one of these stitches as the foundation.

I think that might be one of the reasons I enjoy colourwork. In it’s simplest form, you’re creating stocking stitch. If you’re knitting flat that means you’ll knit 1 row and purl the next. And if you’re working in the round, you’ll find yourself just knit, knit, knitting away each round.

But, after carefully selecting colours and following the pattern that shows you where to arrange each one, you’re suddenly creating a beautifully patterned fabric or cute picture.

It’s like magic.

I’ve spent the last 2 months emerged in colourwork as I set about bringing one of my most popular classes online.

Colourwork, also known as stranded or Fair Isle knitting, has remained popular through the decades and continues to be a big source of inspiration and joy for many knitters.

The patterns you create can be intricate, abstract, bold or vibrant. Your imagination really is the limit!

When I’m teaching colourwork I always create a design that will get all of the basics in. A pattern that requires you to learn how to carry colours across the back of the work, a pattern that lets you play with colour combinations and learn about colour dominance.

All the little pieces of the puzzle that combine to creating beautiful colourwork knitting.

And so, for my online course, I created my Colourwork Coasters trio.

I had a lot of fun making these. They’re small and quick and ideal for starting out with.

I have plans to knit them in thicker yarn and then join them together to form a patchwork blanket. I just have to choose my colour palette.

The Colourwork Coasters pattern is available as a PDF now on my website and on Ravelry. I’ve also put together kits, although these are also a great project for using up odds and ends in your stash.

And the pattern is also included in the Academy for Knitters membership. The doors to the Academy close tonight, so if you’d like to everything about colourwork knitting, make sure you grab a spot ASAP. You’ll also have access to all of the other classes and courses.

Until next time, happy knitting!
