The First Chicks of the Year

The first chicks of the year hatched three days ago. Two darling little Silkie chicks, set without planning permission by their mama, but I upon discovery I had to let her keep the eggs, and now I am so happy that I did as I watch her raise these two tiny babies. The hen, Miss Grey, is an old hand and an excellent broody. She excepts other chicks in broad daylight without question as needed, which makes her so special. Most other hens will try to kill any babies that aren't their own, and few will except new chicks. The ones that do usually need to have the chicks slipped under them at night, so that they think they have hatched out their clutch in the morning.

Anyway, they say a picture is worth a thousand words, and certainly I cannot describe these chick's cuteness levels adequately in so many words. So I'll leave you with the photos, wish you a good weekend and also pop the link in for the pictures of last year's chicks (you've really got to take a look).

Happy chicken-gazing!
